EU-Horizon2020 collaborations

TAUW participates in several EU-Horizon2020 projects which focus on collaboration, knowledge exchange, knowledge building involving academic research institutions and private sector companies across Europe.

GREENER

TAUW participates in the EU-Horizon2020 project ‘GREENER – InteGRated SystEms for ENvironmEntal Remediation’. GREENER proposes the development of green, sustainable, efficient, and low-cost solutions for soil/sediment and water bioremediation. The project team consists of twenty partners from Europe and China. During the third-year of the project, TAUW has continued successful work with its GREENER partners to further develop and scale-up biological-based technologies to perform pilot demonstrations at field scale for groundwater environments contaminated with metals, metalloids and hydrocarbons. The first demonstration in Belgium was recently finalized. A second demonstration is scheduled for the second half of 2022 in Spain. The project will end in August 2023 after a 6 month extension due to limitations in 2020-21 by the Covid pandemic.

REMEDI

TAUW participates in a research and development project for a new methodology for pharmaceutical wastewater treatment. The research focuses on pharmaceutical substances that are excreted unchanged by the human body and end up in wastewater. Sewage treatment plants struggle to control this group of substances. Complex and expensive technologies are needed to remove these traces. As part of the REMEDI project, new technologies are being developed to “capture” and recycle these substances. The researchers are accompanied by environmental consultants from TAUW.

RECYCLE

TAUW is involved as a project partner in the RECYCLE project. The aim of this project is to develop new technologies to trap used pesticides components which in agriculture are often applied over large areas using sprayers and then end up in soil and surface water. The RECYCLE project aims to recover pesticides from agricultural land drainage systems or polluted surface water. Within RECYCLE a significant amount of (academic) knowledge has been developed and shared. TAUW contributes to ensure that the knowledge gained can be implemented in practice.
