Our solutions

We shape a vital living environment by providing impactful solutions. In our work through a broad range of services and in our operations by reducing our CO2 footprint and waste. This is no longer possible without digitalisation, which is part of so much of what we do. Let’s take a look at the positive impact we are making!

We provide impactful solutions in our work

Public and private organisations face a broad range of societal challenges. We offer sustainable solutions through services and activities in various working fields. Digitalisation is a major transformative process which is continually changing the way we and our clients respond to opportunities to create a vital living environment. In our work, we understand the value of data. We contribute to improved efficiency in use of data and data systems and create valuable digital solutions as part of our service to clients. Together with our passionate experts, we strive to balance economic, environmental and social aspects in everything they do.

The themes we have impact on

  • Climate adaptation

Climate change is placing serious pressure on the liveability of our cities and rural areas. Adapting to climate change is no longer a new concept. Adopting climate adaptation strategies is necessary to preserve the future liveability of our environment, a major challenge which requires creativity and significant cooperation.

  • Biodiversity

Rich biodiversity is essential for ecosystems and, ultimately, our health. There is an inherent beauty to these biodiverse ecosystems, but they also provide food, building materials and raw materials. We work with our clients to preserve and restore ecosystems and biodiversity in our living environment with comprehensive solutions.

  • Sustainable spatial development

Sustainability is also an increasingly important theme in urban development. We are frequently asked to make areas as climate adaptive, circular or energy and CO2 neutral as possible. It is therefore important to make the right connections when designing and transforming urban areas. Only then, can abstract concepts be translated into concrete ambitions and workable solutions.

  • Transactions and responsible investments

The importance of environmental and sustainability aspects in transaction and investment processes is growing. Responsible investment and the integration of environmental, social and governance (ESG) aspects into investment decisions and processes are increasingly considered a ‘must’. We offer our clients a reality check with regard to the possible sustainability, environmental and business risks and consequences of their proposed investments.

  • Quality, Environment, Health & Safety compliance

In the field of Quality, Environment, Health & Safety (QEHS), companies search for ways to optimise business processes while complying with environmental, health and safety regulations and identifying potential environmental risks. TAUW bundles its expertise to provide comprehensive compliance advice to enable organisations to seize and retain opportunities and to fully comply with both legal and social obligations.

  • Water

2021 has been a startling year in terms of hydrology and climate. The water-related projects TAUW carried out in recent years had, mostly, a drought component. The focus in 2021 increasingly came to be on the broader climate challenge and not just on drought issues. The floods in parts of Europe and the absence of extreme drought in the summer of 2021 reinforced this. An effective, robust and sustainable solution requires an integrated and regional (or even national) approach, which was reflected in TAUW’s projects in 2021.

  • Energy transition

CO2 emissions must be reduced substantially in the coming years if the Paris climate goals are to be met. During the climate summit in Glasgow in the autumn of 2021, almost all countries were present to further develop the previous agreements made in Paris. Steps are being taken at the international and national levels, but the task is significant. TAUW helps clients take the next right steps in the energy transition, connecting with other issues concerning climate and soil.

  • Site-(re)development

New development and land use changes at industrial and business sites can pose legal and financial risks for project developers and investors. In particular, the development of pre-occupied industrial and commercial areas places high demands on interdisciplinary planning. TAUW guides industries, investors, project developers and governments comprehensively in this complex process from the initial risk assessment to the demolition and site preparation phases.

  • Sustainable remediation

Soil is one of our foundations. When soil is contaminated, it is very likely that it will be necessary to take measures to reduce or solve liabilities. Governments, industry, private companies and others see us as a reliable partner, always looking for sustainable and innovate solutions. We help give our clients peace of mind by developing a remediation strategy for each location and designing sustainable solutions using natural processes and materials as much as possible.

  • New business models

We have embraced change for nearly 100 years. Not only in our projects, but also in the way we think and act. Being open to new business models is one of the ways in which we have impact on a vital living environment. Many of these new business models and ideas find their basis at Syntraal.

We provide impactful solutions in our operations

Sustainability is a top priority in our operations and we try to reduce our CO2 footprint and waste impact as much as possible. We are proud to hold multiple industry certifications. With small, large, formal and informal measures in our business operations, we ensure a positive impact on the environment and climate.

CO2 emissions in tons per year

(data and targets only for TAUW NL)

TAUW actively monitors its energy consumption and business transport and the associated CO2 emissions since 2014, which forms an important basis for focussing on sustainability, reducing the impact on the environment and our CO2 footprint. Because of these ambitions we are certified for the CO2 performance ladder (level 5) and ISO14001.

Although our offices have been used less frequently during this period, they consumed the same level of energy compared to previous years. TAUW encourages the use of public transport and the fleet will be fully electrified in the coming years. By 2021, 51% of the lease cars was fully electric.

Emissions from business transport and combustion of natural gas in the buildings
Goal: by 2023 TAUW will emit 50% less CO2 per FTE compared to 2019; by 2030, the CO2 reduction will be 100% (with the exception of the “buy” inevitable) and we will be climate neutral.

Emissions from electricity consumption, transport by private vehicles and air traffic
Goal: by 2023 TAUW will emit 15% less CO2 per FTE compared to 2019.

Our electric lease policy

(data and targets only for TAUW NL)

We are proud of the electrification of our fleet. TAUW has had an electric lease policy since 2019, meaning all non-electric lease cars will be replaced by fully electric ones at the end of their contract. In 2021, TAUW Group owned a total of 87 fully electric lease cars. The vast majority of them (58) were purchased in 2020. Our ambition is to have all passenger lease cars replaced by fully electric vehicles by 2023. Additionally, we are the proud owner of two full electrical fieldwork buses and we are working on initiatives to use hydrogen-powered buses for fieldwork.

With ISO certifications, we are able to demonstrate that we are continually improving our performance, that we comply with laws and regulations and that we manage the environmental risks of our work. By structurally monitoring emissions, waste flows, raw materials used, energy and other environmental aspects, we can make our environmental objectives and results concrete and transparent. Note: not all TAUW countries are certified at the same level. Please contact the relevant country for more information.
